One of the most exciting days I’ve ever had was my first ultrasound 2 weeks ago. I think every pregnant woman gets giddy about the idea of seeing her little baby for the first time ever, but this day was like Christmas to me.
From the day it was scheduled, I did a countdown from 4 weeks. Each week dragged by until it finally reached that day. Then of course each hour dragged by. Patrick came with me, and I’m pretty sure he will never be allowed into another gynocologist office again. I don’t know what movies he’s been watching, but he had some crazy idea that gynocologist offices are manned by beautiful blondes and that the walls are decorated with pictures and diagrams of vaginas. Of course, he has also never been an actual participant in a visit to the gyno either, so when we were wisked into a dark room that had a mini TV with what looked like a turkey baster attached, he probably thought he was going to be eating a turkey dinner and watching ESPN.
I will spare you with the details, but let’s just say it was no Thanksgiving feast or football game. What we saw was amazing though. Even though I was only 11 weeks at the time, that little 2-inch baby was moving all over the place. By this stage, the baby is almost fully formed. We could see amazing details like the fingers, feet and toes! We saw the heart beating and also got a glimpse of the baby playing with the umbilical cord. To finally see that little person that is living inside of me makes me wonder how some people claim that this baby is not a living person yet.
The technician measured the head, the body, the spine, and gave us a bunch of pictures. My favorite one is of the little guy/girl laying on his/her side with his/her knee up. The baby looks like a little kidney bean. A very adorable, 2-inch kidney bean.
I’m going back next Thursday for another ultrasound, and I can’t wait to see how much the baby has grown!
